HONOURS

Oliver

Green

Brisbane

Oliver Green started the Cross Country season by winning the Year 12 Inter-House Cross Country in convincing fashion against some quality runners in a strong field. He took this form into the PSA Cross Country season winning three of the six 5km races, and narrowly placing second in the three remaining races against state standard athletes. Injured in the second half of the season with a long-term leg injury, Oliver's training programme was restricted, however, he was still able to place third in the All Schools 3km race at Aquinas College, seventh in the All Schools race at Wesley College and fourth in the All Schools Ray Brown 8km race at Kings Park.

Given these outstanding performances throughout the season against the elite runners from the seven Colleges, Oliver can rightfully lay claim to being one of the best Cross Country runners in the PSA. While quiet and reserved on the outside, within Oliver is a very competitive, determined runner with the mental strength to push himself to the absolute limit in the heat of the competition. As Co-Captain of the team he set a perfect example to others on how to prepare for races and then to perform at your very best. Often running injured and not fully fit, Oliver has the rare ability to run through the pain barrier and keep running hard when others would give up. This was the hallmark of his outstanding Cross Country season.

HONOURS

Timothy

Andrew

12

Ross

Tim has been an integral member of arguably one of Scotch's strongest ever hockey sides. He has been a part of the 1st XI since 2012, making his debut in Year 9. He was the Captain of the winning Ray House Cup Team, the first side since 2006 to win the competition outright. Tim scored a prolific 16 goals for the season culminating in him winning the best and fairest for the Scotch side.

His leadership throughout this season has been outstanding, leading from the front both on and off the field. He set the standard of play in many games and through his sheer determination and will to succeed; he changed the course of several games throughout the season. He also had a significant impact on the younger players at training. His tremendous work ethic and his encouragement and direction of other players had a direct bearing on the development of these players. He would also give up his time on a Friday to come and umpire junior games for the School. Tim is the perfect role model for our up and coming players.

Outside of PSA hockey, Tim has also achieved at a state level being selected in the WA under 12s, 13s, 15s, 16s and 18s, winning the national title in both the 16s and 18s sides. He also made his debut this year for the UWA side in the MTL, which is the top men's league in Australia.

As a player, Tim sets himself apart from others through his bursts of speed and stick skill. He is able to turn a game with his pace cutting through opposition defence regularly, scoring crucial goals in big games that proved to be vital to Scotch College securing the cup.

Tim's skill level and attitude has had a tremendous bearing on the success of the 2015 Scotch 1st XI. He is a highly skilled player, tremendous leader and a role model to all boys on and off the sporting field.

HONOURS

Mac

Hanlin

12

Stuart

Mac has been involved in Debating since Year 8 and it is a testament to his ability that he has been selected for the Scotch firsts team in Year 10, 11 and 12. Within the WADL competition, Mac and his team have made it through to the finals from Year 9, reaching the quarter-finals in 2012 and 2013, semi-finals in 2014 and in 2015 Mac and his team were runners up in the Grand Final.

Mac was selected for the final 12 person squad for the state team in 2013 and secured his spot on the state team in both 2014 and 2015. As a Year 11, Mac and the WA team saw their first entrance through to the National Finals since 2006. The state team won through to the National Finals again in 2015 with even stronger results in the qualifying rounds. Mac's experience in Debating in any of the three speaking positions makes him a true all-rounder, a very rare thing in Debating. His knowledge of international relations has been significant in his team's success.

As second speaker, Mac confidently delivers his substantive argument to supplement and reinforce the team's argument. His rebuttal is delivered passionately and in a clearly structured style, working to defeat the opposition while eloquently strengthening his own team's case. Throughout each debate it is common for the opposition to ensure they know who is asking a point of information before accepting it. They often reject Mac, fearing his formidable points. Within his own team, Mac leads by guiding the team in the impromptu preparation sessions and then monitoring and encouraging the points of information offered by his teammates during the debates.

This year Mac was selected as the Captain of Debating and has been pivotal in the expansion of Debating at Scotch. He has played a major role in bringing Debating to the Middle School, both in gaining interest with a Debating Showcase, as well as coaching a team of Year 7 boys. This means Scotch Debating now encompasses six year groups with just under 100 boys; a significant jump from the 35 students in 2011 when Mac was in Year 8.

Mac's involvement does not end with Australian style debating in the WADL and AHISA competitions; he has also participated in Mock Trials, with his team narrowly missing the finals this year. In the British Parliamentary Debating Competition, his team reached the state final in 2014. Furthermore, Mac has entered a variety of speech competitions, where he has reached the state finals in each one in which he has participated.

It is for these reasons that Mac is a most worthy recipient of Honours for Achievement in Debating.

HONOURS

Emerson

Carlberg

12

Ross

Emerson is an outstanding sportsman who has achieved at the highest level in sailing both within and outside of the College over the past four years.

Emerson joined the Scotch College sailing team in 2010 as a crew member. By the summer of 2011 he had advanced to be a skipper in the 1st team. In 2012, as a Year 9, he was one of three skippers involved in Scotch College's winning National School Teams Racing Regatta. The following year he was again involved as a skipper in the Scotch team that finished second in the national regatta. This year Emerson led the Scotch 1st team to victory in the State Championships. At all of these regattas, Emerson's performance and sportsmanship has been singled out by race officials and other competitors as being exemplary.

Emerson's record of achievement is remarkable, having been runner-up in the State Championships as well as winning the State title twice. At the national level he has been both a runner-up and national champion.

Outside of Scotch, Emerson has also had much success. He has won multiple state championships in the 420 class and in December 2013 Emerson won the Open National 420 Championships. As a result of this outstanding achievement Emerson was inducted into the Western Australian Institute of Sport, the Australian Sailing Youth Team, and was selected to represent Australia at the 2014 ISAF Youth World Championships. He represented Australia with pride and professionalism.

Emerson continued his run of success in 2014, again winning the Open National Championships in December. Emerson was again selected to represent Australia at the 2015 ISAF Youth World Championships, to be held in October this year, unfortunately he is unable to compete due to Year 12 examinations.

Emerson will leave behind a lasting legacy, not only in his achievements but in his leadership of younger students. Emerson's impressive record makes him a most worthy recipient of Honours.
